The History of Our Genre

Romance Films:
Romance films are love stories, or affairs of the heart that centre on passion, emotion, and the romantic, affectionate involvement of the main characters (usually a leading man and lady), and the journey that their love takes through courtship or marriage.

Romance films make the love story or the search for love the main plot focus. Oftentimes, lovers in screen romances (often romantic dramas) face obstacles and the hazards of hardship, finances, physical illness, racial or social class status, occupation, psychological restraints, or family that threaten to break their union and attainment of love.

Romantic films often revolve around many different types of love, however, usually only focus on one or two throughout the film. Romantic films serve as great escapes and fantasies for viewers, especially if the two people finally overcome their difficulties, declare their love, and experience life "happily ever after" - implied by a reunion and final kiss.

In most romantic films, the love that the main characters hold is used as a shield from the harshness of the real world and their surroundings, sometimes even the family of characters will do everything they can to stop the love from blossoming.

I think that the film that we will make could come under this genre as it includes a romance that needs to bloom and the problems that come with it.

Chick Flick:
Often considered an all-encompassing sub-genre, they mostly include dialogue-laden, formulated romantic comedies (with mis-matched lovers or female relationships), tearjerkers and gal-pal films, movies about family crises and emotional catharsis, some traditional 'weepies' and fantasy-action adventures, sometimes with foul-mouthed and empowered females, and female bonding situations involving families, mothers, daughters and children.

I think that chick flicks would be a good genre to base our film, upon as it includes the main romantic storyline and the dramas that come with it, however, our film could be declassed from this genre the genre is usually a romantic comedy with miss-matched partners or embarrassing parents. Our film will be more drama and mystery based than comedy.

Drama:
Drama Films are serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature. A dramatic film shows us human beings at their best, their worst, and everything in-between.

The genre drama; has numerous different sub-genre’s including romance. This is good for our film, as it would include the romantic side of the story and the mystery of the letters.

I think this genre would be completely appropriate for our film as it fits the storyline in which we have created and the twist which will happen towards the end of the movie.

Final Genre:
We have decided that our film best fits into the sub-genre of romance, although it could also be very much included in the drama genre, we decided that it should be in the romance genre as the majority of the film is based upon the blossoming love of the two main characters. The twist of the story also fits into this genre and therefore it is completely appropriate for our film.
