Before deciding on a
distributor for our film we decided to look into the options available and then
chose which one would suit our film best. The first distributor we looked at
was Entertainment Film Distributors.
Entertainment distributors are the UK’s
largest independent film distributor operating in both the UK and the republic
or Ireland. Founded in 1978 Entertainment distributes in theatrical, DVD rental and
retail fields as well as licensing a substantial catalogue in both Pay-Tv and
Free-TV sectors. In recent times entertainment has shown a continued growth and
success in the distribution of films building up a large film library over the
years. A major film trilogy distributed by this company was The Lord of the
Rings Trilogy, which in its peak won seven academy awards. Since 2000 Entertainment have received a
total of thirty-eight Oscar’s and twenty-two BAFTAs. Since lord of the rings Entertainment has had further success with other big box office hits such as, Gangs of New York,
Hairspray, Sex and the City, Saw, 17 Again, Final Destination franchise and
British films such as Stormbreaker, Run Fat Boy Run and St Trinian’s 1 &
2. Future films from the company include Martin Scorsese’s first family
film, Hugo, and the untitled Freddie Mercury project.
The second distribution
company we looked at was the UK film council whose main aim is to distribute
non-mainstream films and make them more widely available to cinema audiences, and
support the export of UK film abroad. On there website the company says that
they can make non-mainstream films more accessible in three ways.
improving
access – There Digital Screen Network is made up of 240 digital screens across
the UK that now show non-mainstream films regularly.
Raising
awareness – There Prints and Advertising Fund provides £2 million every year to
help British distributors promote non-mainstream films.
Increasing information – there website, http://www.findanyfilm.com/
is one of the UK's leading websites for film fans looking to watch, buy,
download or rent films. http://www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/funding
After looking in detail at both these
companies and discussing with each other we have decided that Entertainment
would be the distributor we would chose to distribute our film. This is because
this company is much more established and is a more recognized distributor
world wide.
